The relevant passage in the Rhetorica ad Herennium (3.19.32) advises that the backgrounds be “neither too bright nor too dim.” By emphasizing that the places be ill-lit, Albertus adjusts the passage, whether consciously or not, to what Mary Carruthers has designated an aesthetic of “Gothic gloom”; see Carruthers, Craft of Thought, 216–17.
